Montana Softball Bows Out of Big Sky Tournament

Montana Softball Season Concludes with Competitive Loss in Big Sky Conference Tournament

MISSOULA—The Montana softball team wrapped up its season on a challenging note, suffering a 19-9 defeat to Northern Colorado in the consolation round of the Big Sky Conference tournament held in Greeley, Colorado. Despite the loss, the Grizzlies showcased resilience, hammering out 12 hits and tying their season high with three home runs, though they finished the tournament with an 0-2 record.

In a night marked by strong performances from the team’s seniors, Grace Hardy, Madison Tarrant, and Presley Jantzi each belted home runs, with Jantzi leading the day going 3-for-4 at the plate. Senior Kynzie Mohl also shined, finishing her tournament perfect at the plate with a 4-for-4 showing. "We swung the bats well today," said UM head coach Stef Ewing. "I told the seniors to swing like they’ve never missed… it was awesome to see big hits and home runs from them."

Montana briefly took the lead in the first inning when Tarrant hit a three-run home run after Jantzi and Mohl reached base. However, Northern Colorado responded decisively, hitting two three-run homers in the second inning and another significant run in the following frames, ultimately building a commanding lead.

In a spirited fight to the end, the Grizzlies scored late, highlighted by Hardy’s and Jantzi’s home runs. Despite trailing significantly, they remained competitive, ending the game with two runners on base. “We fought all year and didn’t go down easy,” Ewing noted, reflecting on the team’s progress throughout the season, which concluded with an 8-42 record in her inaugural year. She emphasized the importance of building confidence and a strong team culture moving forward. Northern Colorado advances to face either Portland State or Sacramento State in the next round of the tournament.
