Press Release: Beartooth Pass Snow Removal Begins
BEARTOOTH PASS, Mont. – Crews from the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) have commenced the vital task of clearing snow from Beartooth Pass, an essential route connecting Montana and Wyoming that showcases stunning mountain vistas. Climbing to 5,000 feet, the road remains closed until it can be safely cleared and repaired, a process complicated by harsh winter conditions like whiteouts and darkness.
Section Supervisor Duane Reisig described the unique challenges faced by workers, often navigating up to 40 feet of snow piled over the road. “You just take your time, be safe. I enjoy it. It’s thrilling, but it’s definitely dangerous,” he noted, highlighting the adrenaline rush that comes with the job.
The Beartooth Pass attracts both local and international visitors, making its seasonal opening significant for tourism. Billings Maintenance Chief Walt Houghton remarked that the clearing of the pass symbolizes the end of winter, further underscoring its importance to the community and travelers alike. Once MDT completes its snow removal, the Park Service will open the remaining road leading into Yellowstone National Park, marking a much-anticipated arrival of spring.
