Press Release: Griz Nation Oral History Project Celebrates 130 Years of University of Montana History
MISSOULA, Mont. – In a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of Grizzly athletics, students at the University of Montana (UM) have launched the Griz Nation Oral History Project. This initiative is part of UM’s Griz130 celebration, marking 130 years of rich university history.
Graduate student Sam Tyrrel and his peers have meticulously documented personal stories from a diverse range of interviewees, including athletes, coaches, fans, and community members. "There’s a certain realness associated with oral histories that you won’t necessarily get from news reports or books," Tyrrel shared. The project features compelling narratives from track stars to superfans and even world champion skydiver B.J. Worth, whose illustrious career includes stunts in popular films.
Tyrrel emphasized the importance of allowing interviewees to narrate their own experiences, fostering authenticity throughout the project. The collection, comprising 36 interviews, will be archived at UM’s Mansfield Library and made accessible to the public.
As the project wraps up, Tyrrel hopes it will inspire others to engage in documenting and preserving the living history of their communities, ensuring that the spirit of Griz Nation continues to resonate for generations to come.
