Montana Voters Must Adapt to New Registration Requirements After SB 276
HELENA, Mont. – Montana voters will face new registration requirements following the signing of Senate Bill 276 by Governor Greg Gianforte. The legislation, sponsored by Mike Cuffe, mandates that voters present a form of photo identification when registering to vote.
Acceptable forms of ID include a Montana driver’s license, military ID, tribal photo ID, U.S. passport, and student photo ID from universities, among others. Previously, voters could rely on non-photo identification methods, such as providing a piece of mail or filling out a form.
Secretary of State Christy Jacobson endorsed the bill, stating, “Photo ID to vote is a common sense, nonpartisan best practice that will facilitate smoother operations for election officials and enhance the voting experience for Montanans casting their ballots.”
As the new regulations take effect, voters are urged to familiarize themselves with the updated identification requirements to ensure a seamless voting experience in upcoming elections. The shift aims to streamline voting processes and uphold election integrity across the state.
