Judge Rules Kohberger’s Family May Attend His Trial for Idaho Killings

Bryan Kohberger’s family members are allowed to attend his upcoming quadruple-murder trial for the stabbings of four University of Idaho students, despite the potential for them to be called as witnesses. A judge’s ruling emphasized Kohberger’s Sixth Amendment right to a public trial, asserting that having family present supports fair proceedings and reinforces the responsibilities of the prosecution and the court. This ruling comes as Kohberger faces charges for the November 2022 murders of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves at a rental home in Moscow, Idaho.

Judge Steven Hippler noted that bringing family members to the trial might deter perjury and inspire other witnesses to come forward, thus contributing to justice. Although typically, witnesses may be barred from attending trials to avoid influence on their testimonies, Hippler concluded that Kohberger’s rights take precedence in this case. He justified the decision by stating the risk of the family altering their testimonies based on trial observations is minimal, as their testimony scope is narrow, and they have provided recorded interviews beforehand.

The prosecution plans to seek the death penalty if Kohberger is convicted. Hippler also highlighted that the family members of the victims have been permitted to attend the trial. The trial is slated to begin in August, marking a significant phase in a case that has drawn considerable public attention.
