Byron Scott, a former player and coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, faces a lawsuit alleging sexual assault against a 15-year-old girl in 1987. The lawsuit, initially filed in December 2022 and amended in May 2023, accuses Scott of sexual battery and false imprisonment during a Lakers event at Campbell Hall High School in Los Angeles. The alleged incident took place in a locked janitor’s closet while the Lakers were filming a basketball instructional video.
At the time of the incident, Scott was 26 years old and in his fourth season with the Lakers, having already won two of his three NBA championships. The amended complaint publicly names Scott, now 64 years old, as the defendant after a judge ruled last year that he could be identified. The lawsuit is made possible under a California law allowing past cases to be reopened for underage plaintiffs.
Scott’s attorney, Linda Bauermeister, stated that Scott believed the girl was of legal age at the time and expressed shock over the allegations, which she claims have devastated him and his family. Scott, who enjoyed a decade-long career with the Lakers, led the team in scoring during the 1987-88 season and also played for the Indiana Pacers and the Vancouver Grizzlies.
In addition to his playing career, he coached in the NBA from 1998 to 2016, including a stint with the Lakers, and is currently coaching in the Philippines. The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and damages exceeding $25,000, covering lost earnings and attorney fees to be paid by both Scott and the school.
