Ex-Commissioner Heads Initiative to Eradicate Dark Money in Montana Politics

Former Political Practices Commissioner Launches Initiative to Combat Dark Money in Politics

MISSOULA, Mont. — Jeff Mangan, former state Commissioner of Political Practices, has initiated a grassroots effort dubbed the Transparent Election Initiative, aiming to eliminate dark money from politics. During a recent event in Missoula, Mangan engaged with citizens to gather input on desired changes in campaign finance.

The initiative is nonpartisan and seeks to foster transparency within political funding, addressing widespread discontent regarding the increasing influence of money in elections. “In the last couple of elections, we’ve seen so much money, and people’s mailbox filled with flyers, and it’s on the TV nonstop,” Mangan stated in an interview with NBC Montana. He emphasized the collective frustration among voters, highlighting a growing demand for reform.

Mangan’s discussions are rooted in Montana’s historical context of citizen-led advocacy, encouraging a renewed spirit of activism among residents. He aims to mobilize efforts for campaign finance reform, whether through legislative changes or voter initiatives. Mangan plans to travel across the state to continue these conversations, with his next stop scheduled for the Glacier County Library on Friday at 1 p.m.

"Montanans have a rich history of fighting against the influence of money in politics. We need to rekindle that spirit and explore how we can effect meaningful changes moving forward,” he added.

Mangan’s commitment to fostering transparent elections reflects a broader national concern over the impact of dark money in political processes, as he seeks to empower citizens to reclaim their voice and influence in governance. Through collaborative efforts, the Transparent Election Initiative hopes to lead the charge for reform in campaign finance within Montana and beyond.
