Flathead County Judge Amy Eddy Announces Candidacy for Montana Supreme Court
Flathead County District Court Judge Amy Eddy officially declared her candidacy for an open seat on the Montana Supreme Court on Tuesday. This seat will be vacated by Justice Beth Baker in 2027. Eddy joins another candidate, District Court Judge Dan Wilson from Flathead, in the race for the state’s highest judicial position.
Eddy’s legal career began in Kalispell, following her graduation from the University of Montana School of Law. Appointed to the district court by former Democratic Governor Steve Bullock in 2015, she has since secured her position with strong electoral support, receiving 81% of the vote in 2016 and 73% in her most recent retention election in 2024.
The upcoming 2026 election cycle will mark a significant shift in Montana’s judicial election landscape due to the recent passage of House Bill 39. This legislation allows political parties to contribute to judicial candidates, while candidates themselves remain officially nonpartisan. The implications of this law could reshape judicial campaigns in Montana, although previous efforts to permit candidates to run under party labels have not succeeded.
As the race for the Montana Supreme Court gathers momentum, Eddy’s candidacy highlights the growing interest in judicial reform and the influence of political dynamics in judicial elections. Both she and Wilson will be vying for support as they prepare for what promises to be a competitive election.
