Press Release: Update on Sawlog Fire in Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest
BEAVERHEAD-DEERLODGE NATIONAL FOREST, Mont. – The Sawlog Fire continues to burn in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, having consumed approximately 1,500 acres and remaining just 10 percent contained. This wildfire is the largest among over 200 reported in Montana this year.
Efforts to combat the blaze involve a dedicated team of 121 personnel, including three firefighting crews, three engine units, and one helicopter. Anna Bateson, the Sawlog Fire Information Officer, shared insights into the firefighting efforts. She noted that prior burns, such as the Alder and Christiansen Fires from 2021, may help slow the fire’s spread due to different fuel conditions.
Recent weather has presented both challenges and opportunities; precipitation, including higher elevation snow, has altered the fire’s behavior, resulting in creeping and smoldering flames. However, these wet conditions complicate access for firefighting teams, necessitating specialized vehicles for certain areas.
Looking ahead, Bateson cautioned that warmer, drier weather is expected mid-week, potentially increasing fire activity. NonStop Local will provide ongoing updates during this wildfire season, keeping the Montana community informed about the situation.
