Montana Enacts Law Protecting Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers Amid Growing Attacks

Montana has enacted a new law aimed at shielding pro-life pregnancy centers from increased regulatory pressures and vandalism. Governor Greg Gianforte signed House Bill 388, which prohibits state and local governments from imposing any requirements on these centers related to abortion services, including referral or promotion of abortion-inducing drugs.
The legislation, supported predominantly by Republicans in the state legislature, aims to ensure that pro-life centers can continue providing essential services, such as pregnancy tests, counseling, and adoption referrals without fear of interference. Under the law, centers are also protected from being forced to hire individuals who do not share their pro-life mission.
This move arrives amid what proponents describe as “unprecedented attacks” on pro-life organizations since the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson’s Women’s Health Organization, which has spurred a backlash from pro-abortion activists. Critics of the bill, including advocates from Planned Parenthood, argue that unregulated centers could misinform patients regarding their medical options.
The largely partisan vote reflects the ongoing national divide on reproductive rights, with significant implications for the operation of pro-life organizations in Montana.
