Florida Man and His Dog Found Dead in Suspected Bear Attack

Authorities are investigating a tragic incident in Florida where an 89-year-old man, Robert Markel, and his dog were found dead, suspected victims of a bear attack. Their bodies were discovered at his home in Jerome, Collier County, shortly after 7 a.m. on Monday. According to George Reynaud from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the man and his dog were located within a few hundred yards of each other in different areas of the property.

The investigation suggests that the attack involved a bear, although it remains unclear whether it was a single bear or multiple bears. The incident potentially occurred at different times, as stated by Reynaud, who referred to the area being just south of the Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area.

In response to the attack, authorities have established a perimeter and are deploying drones to locate the bear or bears responsible. They have also set traps in the area where the attack happened. DNA evidence has been collected from the scene to aid in the investigation. The wildlife agency believes the bear involved is likely a Florida black bear, which is the only bear species native to the state, with an estimated population of around 4,050.

The FWC is focused on identifying the bear or bears involved to ensure public safety and prevent future attacks. The investigation is ongoing as officials continue to gather evidence and monitor the situation in the vicinity.
