Montana State Signs Head Coach Brent Vigen to New Four-Year Contract

Montana State University (MSU) is excited to announce the signing of head football coach Brent Vigen to a new four-year contract, effective January 1, 2024. The deal, confirmed by Athletic Director Leon Costello, significantly increases Vigen’s annual base salary to $295,000, a substantial rise from his previous contract of under $215,000.

Vigen expressed gratitude toward President Waded Cruzado and Costello, stating, “Molly and I have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Bozeman and look forward to the opportunities ahead.” He also highlighted the commitment of his staff and players in continuing to elevate the football program.

As the head coach since 2021, Vigen has led the Bobcats to an impressive 47-9 record, marking the best winning percentage in program history. Under his guidance, the team has reached the FCS championship game for the second time in four seasons, boasting a perfect 15-0 record this season. Vigen has also earned accolades such as the Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year and the Eddie Robinson Award, FCS Coach of the Year.

The new contract includes a buyout clause starting at $300,000 and various incentives, allowing Vigen to potentially earn over $800,000 annually. Notably, incentives tie into team performance and fundraising, along with a retention bonus of $50,000 each year if he remains through July 1.

Costello praised Vigen’s leadership, noting, “He’s a great representative of Montana State University.” The Bobcats are set to compete in the national championship game against North Dakota State on January 6, adding to the anticipation surrounding Vigen’s renewed commitment to the program.
