Kaitlyn Foster Makes History as Billings’ First Division I Lacrosse Player
BILLINGS — Kaitlyn Foster, a passionate young athlete, is set to make history as the first Division I lacrosse player recruited from Billings. Since picking up a lacrosse stick at age five, Foster has thrived in the sport, drawn to its speed, physicality, and endurance requirements. Initially a multi-sport athlete in middle school, she zeroed in on lacrosse as her primary focus with aspirations for a college scholarship.
However, a sophomore back injury introduced challenges, leading Foster to question her future in the sport. The competition for lacrosse scholarships—especially for athletes from Montana—further complicated her ambitions, as recruitment largely centers around traditional hotbeds like Maryland and New York.
This past winter, during a tournament in San Diego, Foster reignited her passion for the game while playing against elite teams. Encouraged by her Rimrock Lacrosse coach, Hudson Gentile, she began intensively promoting herself to college coaches across the country, despite numerous rejections.
Her efforts finally bore fruit at a Florida tournament, where UMass Lowell’s coaching staff recognized her talent. They offered her a spot on the team without needing to see her at their prospective camp, culminating in Foster’s commitment to the River Hawks.
Foster aims to pave the way for future athletes in Montana, inspiring younger players who might feel disheartened by the lack of representation in lacrosse. “I know that I’m a hard worker, and I can earn playing time,” she stated.
As she prepares to join a vibrant UMass Lowell program, Foster embraces the responsibility of being a role model for aspiring athletes in her home state. Her newfound commitment and excitement for lacrosse reflect not only her personal journey but also the potential impact she can have on future generations.
