Press Article: Tragic Incident Claims Lives of Two Brothers in Lewis & Clark County
GREAT FALLS, MT — Authorities have identified the two deceased individuals found in Lewis & Clark County as 61-year-old Scott Marvin Steinbach and his brother, 64-year-old Ty William Steinbach. The brothers were discovered at a home north of Highway 200 on May 1, 2025, following a report of an internal fire.
Sheriff/Coroner Leo Dutton confirmed that Ty died from gunshot wounds, classified as homicide. Initial investigations revealed that Scott is considered a suspect in his brother’s death. Dutton suggested that the incident may have stemmed from a family dispute.
Further details emerged, indicating that after allegedly shooting Ty, Scott took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In a tragic turn, Scott set the house ablaze, with their parents present during the ordeal. The mother, who attempted to extinguish the flames, sustained burns and was later treated at a medical facility.
Fortunately, a hired hand managed to pull Ty’s body from the fire before it was severely burned. Both parents survived the incident, while the investigation continues. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
