Pakistan Conducts Missile Tests Amid Rising Tensions with India
ISLAMABAD, Oct 9, 2023 – The Pakistan military announced on Monday it conducted a missile test with a range of 120 kilometers (75 miles), marking the second launch in two days as hostilities with India escalate over the disputed Kashmir region. This surge in military activity follows allegations from New Delhi, which accuses Islamabad of supporting a recent deadly attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir that left 26 people dead.
The Pakistani military described the launch as a move to ensure operational readiness and validate technical parameters, such as the missile’s navigation system. On Saturday, a longer-range surface-to-surface missile was tested, boasting a range of 450 kilometers (280 miles).
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed confidence in the military’s preparedness, stating that Pakistan’s defense is in capable hands. Tensions have intensified since Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi granted his military "full operational freedom" to respond to the Pahalgam attack.
As both nations exchange nightly gunfire along the militarized Line of Control, emergency drills and advisories have been implemented in Pakistan, with residents stockpiling food and medicines. Sharif recently postponed an official Malaysia visit amid these heightened tensions. International calls for de-escalation are mounting as both countries navigate this precarious situation.
