Montana Food Banks Prepare for the Effects of Federal Budget Cuts

Montana Food Banks Face Challenges Amid Federal Cuts

BILLINGS — Montana food banks brace for significant reductions in aid as The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) faces federal cuts. The Montana Food Bank Network reported a staggering $2.5 million loss, representing a 40% decrease in funding since March, resulting in a statewide decline of 600,000 pounds of food.

The network, which serves 73 partner agencies, faces immediate shortages, particularly in protein—a staple in many Montanans’ diets. Billings Family Service, one of these agencies, expects to lose around 140,000 pounds of TEFAP food this year. Program Manager Debbie Anderson expressed concern, noting that while the last shipment did not reflect these cuts, upcoming deliveries will.

Community support is becoming increasingly vital. Board member Ed Ulledalen emphasizes the need for both financial donations and food contributions, alongside ongoing volunteer efforts to sustain food distribution. The rising demand for assistance correlates with local economic challenges, including layoffs of approximately 360 U.S. Forest Service employees earlier this year.

Despite these challenges, leaders within the food banks maintain optimism. They are actively seeking alternative resources to mitigate the impact of the funding cuts and ensure that community needs are met.
