Zelensky Expresses Skepticism About Russian Truce Promises | National News

Zelensky Doubts Russia’s Commitment to Ceasefire Ahead of Victory Day

Prague, Czech Republic – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed skepticism regarding Russia’s commitment to a proposed three-day ceasefire coinciding with Moscow’s Victory Day celebrations on May 9. During a joint press conference with Czech President Petr Pavel, Zelensky emphasized that past promises from Russia to halt hostilities had not been honored.

"This is not the first challenge, nor are these the first promises made by Russia to cease fire," said Zelensky, underlining the ongoing conflict since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. He pointed out that despite talks of a truce, Russia intensified its military actions, reporting over 200 attacks on a single day.

Czech President Pavel echoed Zelensky’s sentiments, stating that real adherence to ceasefires is what counts, rather than mere discussions. "Putin can end the war with a single decision, but he has not shown any willingness so far," Pavel remarked.

During his two-day visit to Prague, Zelensky discussed the ongoing military support from the Czech Republic, a NATO member, which has supplied significant humanitarian assistance and military equipment to Ukraine. NATO allies are also working to address ammunition shortages faced by Ukraine, a move Zelensky deemed "excellent." Meetings with Czech officials, including Prime Minister Petr Fiala, are scheduled for Monday.
