Montana State Falls Short in FCS Championship Clash Against North Dakota State
FRISCO, Texas — The Montana State Bobcats faced a familiar foe in the North Dakota State Bison during the FCS Championship game on January 6, 2025, falling short with a close 35-32 defeat at Toyota Stadium. This marks the third consecutive year in which the Bison handed the Bobcats a postseason setback.
In a game defined by missed opportunities, Montana State’s offense struggled initially, allowing the Bison to race to a 14-0 lead. Bobcat quarterback Tommy Mellott, who displayed resilience throughout the season, highlighted the importance of starting strong in critical matchups—something the team could not achieve against NDSU.
Mellott’s efforts included a remarkable second-half push, where he tallied 195 passing yards and scored twice, but the Bobcats could not overcome the early deficit. Coach Brent Vigen expressed his disappointment in the team’s failure to capitalize on critical fourth-down opportunities that could have shifted momentum.
Despite a 15-1 record this season, the Bobcats concluded their campaign without the national title. They showcased their offensive talent, setting single-season program records for total yards and points scored, but were unable to break through North Dakota State’s defensive wall.
"Hat’s off to North Dakota State," Mellott remarked after the game. "Unfortunately, the better team lost today. That’s football.”
Looking ahead, Vigen remains optimistic about the foundation built by this year’s team. With numerous returnees, he envisions continued growth and development as they aim to reclaim their championship aspirations in the coming season. As the Bobcats reflect on the past, the drive to improve and learn from their setbacks remains front and center in Missoula.
