Montana Food Banks Prepare for the Effects of Federal Budget Cuts

Montana Food Banks Brace for Federal Aid Cuts

Montana food banks are bracing for significant shortages due to cuts in The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). The Montana Food Bank Network has already faced a staggering $2.5 million reduction, translating to a loss of 600,000 pounds of food throughout the state this year.

With the program’s funding down by 40% since March, agencies like Billings Family Service predict a drop of approximately 140,000 pounds of food deliveries. Program Manager Debbie Anderson anticipates that protein resources will be particularly hit hard, which is concerning given its prominence in the diets of Montanans.

Board member Ed Ulledalen urged the community to step in and support food banks through donations and volunteer efforts, emphasizing the vital role of local assistance in overcoming these challenges. Meanwhile, Gayle Carlson, President and CEO of the Montana Food Bank Network, noted an increasing number of residents seeking help, exacerbated by rising grocery prices and federal layoffs, notably among U.S. Forest Service employees.

Despite these daunting challenges, Carlson expressed optimism about the food banks’ ability to adapt and meet the growing needs of affected individuals, promising ongoing efforts to secure additional resources. Those interested in assisting can volunteer at Billings Family Service.
