Yemen’s Prime Minister Announces Resignation | National News

Title: Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed Bin Mubarak Resigns Amid Power Struggles

Sana’a, Yemen – Ahmed Bin Mubarak, the Prime Minister of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, announced his resignation on Saturday, citing an inability to fully exercise his powers. His departure follows months of tension and disputes with Rashad al-Alimi, the head of the Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council (PLC). Bin Mubarak revealed his resignation via his social media platform X, stating he could not make essential decisions to reform government institutions.

Since the Huthi rebels captured the capital, Sana’a, in 2014, the Yemeni government has been based in the southern city of Aden. Despite a Saudi-led military intervention beginning in 2015, prompt government recoveries have not materialized. Amid escalating missile attacks by the Huthis against Israel and shipping in strategic waterways, Bin Mubarak’s resignation highlights internal fractures within Yemen’s leadership.

While Bin Mubarak asserted successes in implementing fiscal reforms and anti-corruption measures, analysts suggest his desire for broader power fueled conflicts within the PLC. Mohammed Albasha from the Basha Report Risk Advisory noted, "His ambition to wield presidential powers ultimately isolated him politically," leading to a deteriorating trust among other leadership figures.

The resignation may ease the internal tensions plaguing Yemen’s government. Bin Mubarak, previously a U.S. ambassador and a long-time opponent of the Huthis, had been involved in various government roles since 2018. His exit is seen as a necessary step toward restoring cohesion within Yemen’s recognized government amidst the backdrop of a catastrophic humanitarian crisis resulting from years of civil war.

As the Huthis resume their activities against Israel following the recent Gaza conflict, the situation remains precarious for Yemen and its government.
