East Helena Esports Team Prepares for National Tournament Amid Funding Challenge
EAST HELENA — The East Helena High School esports team, alongside their enthusiastic mascot Caesar, is gearing up for the LOS Scholastic Nationals tournament in St. Louis this June. However, the team faces a significant financial hurdle of approximately $3,000 needed for travel expenses.
Team member Kayleigh Peterson expressed her excitement about this opportunity, saying, “It’s very awesome because I barely ever leave Montana. To be leaving for something related to my school is meaningful since I usually don’t participate in school activities.”
Esports is recognized as an emerging sport by the Montana High School Association, though it has not yet achieved full sanctioning. This recognition could change as interest in esports continues to grow. Mason Skains, a varsity esports coach, envisions elevating East Helena’s program to the same status as traditional sports like football and basketball.
The team hopes the East Helena community will rally to support their journey, with member Ben Paige stating, “I’d love to go to state and prove that Montana is the best!” Peterson added that community support would validate their efforts, saying, “It would mean a lot to see the community come together to fund this, even if they don’t fully understand esports.”
Individuals interested in supporting the team can contribute by contacting Shaun Murgel, East Helena’s activities director, at smurgel@ehps.k12.mt.us or by calling 406-227-7730. With community backing, the East Helena Vigilantes aim to make their mark at the upcoming national tournament.
