Montana Legislative Leaders Respond to Conclusion of 69th Session

Montana Legislature Wraps Up 69th Session, Passing Over 800 Bills

HELENA — The 69th session of the Montana Legislature has officially concluded, with leaders reflecting on a productive four-month term. Throughout 85 working days, lawmakers passed more than 800 bills, marking a significant legislative effort.

Senate President Matt Regier highlighted that this session surpassed all prior efforts post-constitutional convention. Governor Greg Gianforte held a public signing event shortly after adjournment, endorsing several bills aimed at revising Montana’s environmental laws in light of the Held v. Montana decision, stating, “We’ve tightened up those loopholes” to streamline permit processes while ensuring environmental protections.

Key accomplishments included reductions in income tax rates and funding for state prisons, alongside efforts to uphold conservative values. However, disagreements between House and Senate Republicans emerged over property tax reform and state budget allocations. House Majority Leader Steve Fitzpatrick emphasized the importance of compromises that garnered majority support.

Democrats, while remaining in the minority, noted successes including the defeat of partisan judicial elections and enhanced investments in education and childcare. Senate Minority Leader Pat Flowers remarked on the positive impact of gaining additional seats, enhancing Democrats’ ability to influence legislation.

As of Thursday evening, 219 bills have been signed into law, with more pending for Gianforte’s approval.
