Introducing the New England Team Dedicated to Seal Rescue

Block Island, R.I. — The Mystic Aquarium Animal Rescue Team is currently facing a surge in seal entanglements, particularly with gray seals, due to fishing gear, debris, or balloons wrapping around their necks. Program manager Sarah Callan reported 20 entangled seals this year—an alarming uptick compared to previous annual figures. Working alongside the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society and the Block Island Maritime Institute, the team has prioritized the rapid disentanglement of young seals.

During a recent operation, Team members stealthily approached a group of sunbathing seal pups, managing to capture an entangled individual successfully. They conducted essential medical assessments, including blood draws and attaching a tracking device, before removing the net constricting the seal’s neck. “We’re going to be able to just release the seal today and avoid having to bring it into our clinic for rehab,” Callan noted, emphasizing the importance of swift action.

The team previously cared for a seal pup named “Chappy” who tragically succumbed to gastrointestinal issues and plastic ingestion, highlighting the severe impact of marine debris on wildlife. Estimates suggest that plastic pollution kills over 100,000 marine mammals annually, underscoring the urgent need for public awareness regarding ocean health.

Callan expressed concern about the frequency with which young marine animals encounter human-made debris, linking this issue to the wider state of the ocean. Celebrating their success, the team cheered as the freed seal re-entered the water, a moment that represents their commitment to providing second chances for marine life in peril. Mystic Aquarium remains dedicated to educating the public on these critical environmental challenges.
