Rising Temperatures and Worries About Drought

Warmer Summer Forecasted for Montana

GREAT FALLS — Residents of Montana should brace for a potentially hotter summer, with meteorologists indicating a 30% to 50% likelihood of above-average temperatures across the state. Julianna Glinskas from the National Weather Service highlights that much of the western U.S., including Montana, could face a warm and dry season.

Glinskas notes a favorable setup for elevated temperatures and reduced precipitation, attributing this to expected high-pressure conditions over the inner-mountain West, particularly around Utah. Consequently, Montana is anticipated to remain in the "above-average" temperature zone throughout June, July, and August.

The projected heat raises concerns about drought and wildfire risks, although the severity will largely depend on weather developments in May and June—typically crucial months for precipitation. While moisture levels have remained stable recently, more rainfall is essential to mitigate the persistent drought conditions that have affected the region in prior years.

With summer fast approaching, residents are encouraged to stay informed as the forecast looks promising for some late spring moisture, which could help delay drought impacts.
