Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer ‘Super Looper’ Roy Cooper Dies in House Fire

Roy Cooper, Rodeo Pioneer, Passes Away at 69

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The rodeo community mourns the loss of Roy Cooper, a legendary figure in the sport, who tragically died in a house fire on April 29 in Decatur, Texas. He was 69.

A celebrated member of the Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame, Cooper’s illustrious career spanned over three decades, during which he won seven world championships—six in tie-down roping and one in steer roping—highlighted by an all-around title in 1983. This remarkable achievement placed him among an elite group of only ten cowboys to secure rodeo’s prestigious Triple Crown.

Known as "Super Looper," Cooper became a household name in the rodeo world after earning Rookie of the Year honors in 1976. He humbly remarked about his nickname on Ty Harris’ podcast, emphasizing the importance of his era and his contemporaries.

Beyond his accolades, Cooper cherished his friendships, particularly with country music star George Strait, whom he referred to as one of his closest friends. Their bond formed before Cooper’s Triple Crown win, as they shared countless memories and moments together.

Cooper’s career was marked by notable horses, including his beloved Topper, who helped him win several championships. Even after retiring, he remained a significant influence in the sport, organizing a junior world roping championship for over 40 years, drawing competitors nationwide.

His legacy lives on through his sons, Tuf, Clint, and Clif, also accomplished ropers, and the many lives he touched in the rodeo community. Reflecting on his journey, Cooper once shared, "Rodeoing is fun, and it is more fun when you’re winning … and it is more fun with your family." Roy Cooper leaves behind a profound legacy in the rodeo world that will be remembered for generations.
