North Korea has initiated the construction of a significant road bridge linking it to Russia, marking a pivotal development in bilateral relations. State media reported that the bridge, which spans the Tumen River, was agreed upon during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea in 2024. The bridge aims to enhance economic cooperation, facilitate travel, and boost commodity circulation between the two nations.
The bridge will be constructed near the existing “Friendship Bridge,” a rail link built in 1959, and spans nearly 2,800 feet, connecting to the Russian highway system. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin highlighted its importance, stating that the project symbolizes the commitment to strengthening friendly relations and improving inter-regional cooperation. He noted that the bridge would significantly increase transportation volumes and reduce costs, which would ultimately enhance trade and economic collaboration.
Construction of the bridge has been in discussion for years, with expectations set for completion by summer 2026. Alongside this infrastructure project, reports indicate that North Korea is receiving economic and military support from Russia in exchange for arms shipments for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Discussions are underway for the modernization of 14 industrial sectors in North Korea, including metals, aviation, energy, and tourism, according to South Korean intelligence.
Additionally, it is estimated that around 600 North Korean troops have died while fighting for Russia in Ukraine, from a total deployment of approximately 15,000 personnel. This multifaceted partnership underscores the deepening ties between North Korea and Russia amidst geopolitical changes.
