Celebrating National Apprenticeship Day in Montana
Helena, MT — National Apprenticeship Day brought attention to Montana’s nearly 3,000 apprenticeships across various fields, from electricians and plumbers to butchers and interior designers. These programs blend on-the-job experience with classroom instruction, allowing students to earn while they learn.
Kyrie Pontarelli, a fourth-year apprentice at the Montana Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Center in Helena, emphasizes the program’s value, stating, "It is really an investment in yourself for the long run." With 86% of Montana apprentices remaining with their employers five years post-completion, the program proves beneficial for both individuals and businesses.
Sarah Swanson, commissioner for the Montana Department of Labor and Industry, highlighted apprenticeships as vital pathways to opportunity and long-term success. By their fifth year, apprentices typically earn over $22,000 more than their non-apprentice counterparts.
Lewis and Clark County is a frontrunner in apprenticeship participation, boasting nearly 600 active apprentices last year alone. As the state anticipates significant job growth in apprentice occupations over the next decade, events like National Apprenticeship Day celebrate the hard work and contributions of these dedicated individuals.
