Aquatic Pets Find New Homes at University of Montana Event

Press Release: Aquatic Pets Find New Homes in Missoula

MISSOULA — The Invasive Species Action Network (ISAN) hosted a successful pet rehoming event in the University Center at the University of Montana, aimed at giving aquatic pets a second chance. As part of their “Don’t Let it Loose” campaign, ISAN accepted various animals, including fish, turtles, and frogs, allowing pet owners to surrender them responsibly.

The event attracted more than just dormitory fish; notable rescues included Yurtle, Tuna, Bean, and a goldfish named Murphy, who was previously won at a county fair. According to ISAN Executive Director Sara Rickles, many aquatic pets can grow unexpectedly large and pose environmental threats if released into the wild. "Goldfish can become indiscriminate eaters and disrupt local ecosystems," she warned.

The event helped approximately 20 pets find new homes, emphasizing the importance of responsible pet ownership and the risks of introducing non-native species into natural habitats. With collaboration from the Montana Invasive Species Council and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, ISAN plans to expand such rehoming events statewide next year, encouraging sustainable pet management for the community’s aquatic companions.
