Montana Tech Student Awarded Prestigious NSF Fellowship
MISSOULA, Mont. — Ethan Heggem, a mechanical engineering senior from Butte, has received the notable 2025 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. This five-year award offers three years of financial support, including an annual stipend of $37,000.
Dr. Richard LaDouceur, head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, praised Heggem for his exemplary research skills and hard work. "He is a fantastic researcher… I’m excited to see what he accomplishes," he said. Heggem plans to complete both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering within an accelerated five-year timeframe.
Heggem’s love for research began three years ago when he joined the Montana Tech Carbon High-Temperature Advanced Research (CHAR) Lab, focusing on novel techniques for Rare Earth Element extraction and biomass processing. He co-authored a peer-reviewed article on CO2 adsorption using biochar, highlighting its potential for climate reclamation.
Heggem, who has interned with Signal Peak Energy and EPC Services, emphasizes the importance of pursuing one’s passions and taking available opportunities. "Always work hard and pursue what inspires you," he advises, reflecting on his journey toward this esteemed award.
