Press Release: Trout Tagging Initiative Expands in Montana’s Rivers
BOZEMAN, Mont. — Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP), in collaboration with Montana State University, has launched the second year of its trout tagging program in the Big Hole, Beaverhead, Ruby, and Madison Rivers. This initiative aims to monitor trout populations and assess health concerns in the Upper Missouri River Basin.
Anglers play a crucial role in this research by reporting tagged fish caught with tags attached to their dorsal fins. These reports help researchers evaluate the impact of environmental conditions on trout populations. To incentivize participation, anglers reporting tagged fish can receive rewards: blue tags enter them into drawings for fishing gear and trips, while yellow tags are worth $100 each.
Anglers are also reminded to clip tags as close to the trout’s skin as possible and minimize the air exposure for the fish to ensure their survival. Unclaimed tags from last year are still valid for rewards. For further information or to report a tagged trout, please visit Montana FWP’s website at fwp.mt.gov.
