Betsy Arakawa’s Dog Guards Property from Rodents

A state assessment conducted on the property of Gene Hackman and his wife revealed the presence of rodents, but their main living quarters were not infested. The inspection followed the deaths of the couple due to health-related issues in February. Gene Hackman suffered from cardiovascular disease, and Betsy Arakawa passed away from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which is spread through contact with rodents or their waste. The couple’s property had signs of rodent activity in detached buildings and guest houses, but their main residence appeared clean.

The investigation also revealed that Arakawa had canceled a massage appointment due to Hackman feeling ill with flu-like symptoms, with security footage confirming her last public outings to a grocery and pet food store. The couple’s daughters reported that their father was in decline and did not use modern technology. Despite being private individuals who did not hire housekeepers, the main residence was well-kept.

Body camera footage captured the scene at the couple’s home, showing one dog near Arakawa’s body and another found deceased in a dog crate. A veterinary report suggested that the deceased dog may have died from lack of food and water if it was confined during the deaths of the couple. A third dog was found loose at the property and was placed in the care of a friend with the family’s permission. Their bodies were discovered by a maintenance worker concerned about Arakawa’s silence, who then alerted security to the situation.
