Montana Man Pleads Guilty to Possession of Fentanyl with Intent to Deliver in Shoshone County Courthouse
Colton Zimmer, 35, accepted a plea deal on Monday morning at the Shoshone County Courthouse, pleading guilty to possession of fentanyl with intent to deliver. Originally facing trafficking charges, possession of drug paraphernalia, and obstruction, Zimmer agreed to the reduced charge in exchange for dropping the other two charges. The incident occurred in March when Zimmer was stopped by law enforcement while driving from Coeur d’Alene to Billings, Montana. After initially being uncooperative with law enforcement, a K-9 unit discovered approximately 11 grams of fentanyl and drug paraphernalia in Zimmer’s vehicle. While the maximum sentence for his current charge is life imprisonment, the prosecutor’s office is recommending a 10-year sentence for Zimmer. Concerns have been raised by residents about the state’s willingness to make deals in such cases, but Shoshone County Prosecutor Ben Allen emphasized the need to resolve cases without going to trial due to budget constraints. Zimmer’s sentencing is scheduled for June 16.
