Plane carrying 6 passengers crashes in New York with no survivors reported

A private plane crashed in Columbia County, New York, killing all six people on board, including MIT graduate James Santoro and former MIT soccer player Karenna Groff. The plane, a Mitsubishi MU-2B, crashed into a field near Copake after attempting a second landing at Columbia County Airport. The experienced pilot did not make a distress call before impact. The crash occurred in snowy conditions with overcast skies and a temperature of 35 degrees. The plane was flying by instrument, not visually, and investigators have reviewed video footage of the crash. The Mitsubishi MU-2B is a twin-turboprop aircraft with a pressurized cabin, allowing it to fly higher and longer distances than many noncommercial planes. The aircraft was registered to Dynamic Spine Solutions, LLC, based in Massachusetts, and owned by Dr. Michael Groff, a neuroscientist. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has not confirmed the identities of the victims or the cause of the crash. Family friend John Santoro confirmed the deaths of his son and the Groff family in the crash, which occurred while they were en route to a holiday celebration.
