A new exotic animal rescue, Second Chances Exotics Rescue, has recently opened in Arlee, Montana, to provide a safe haven for animals like Sissy, a thirty-year-old macaw who had a difficult past. The rescue takes in a variety of animals, from birds to ferrets to bearded dragons, and aims to educate the public on the care needs and lifespan of exotic pets.
The founders, Lauren Gydas and Jamie Wallace, hope to break the cycle of impulse buying of exotic animals by offering a place where these animals can find a second chance at a loving home. They also plan to start an afterschool education program to teach children about responsible pet ownership.
Despite being self-funded and run by a small team, the rescue is already making a difference in the lives of both animals and humans. They are looking for volunteers to help with animal care, building enclosures, and donations. The message of hope and perseverance is embodied by the names of two of their tortoises, reflecting the positive impact they hope to have on the community.
