Israeli forces have completed encircling Gaza’s southern city of Rafah as part of their plan to seize more areas of the enclave. The military has issued evacuation warnings to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, forcing them into a limited space near the sea. The area being targeted is known as the Morag Axis, once a former Israeli settlement between Rafah and Khan Younis.
Thousands of Palestinians have already fled Rafah, which borders Egypt to the south. The offensive was launched after Hamas attacked southern Israel in 2023, resulting in many casualties and hostages. Since then, over 50,000 Palestinians have been killed, and much of Gaza is in ruins.
Israel resumed the offensive in March after a ceasefire was abandoned, aiming to free the remaining hostages and remove Hamas from Gaza. Hamas, on the other hand, insists on a deal to end the war and has rejected calls to disarm. A delegation from Hamas was expected in Cairo to discuss new truce proposals. The situation remains tense, with no clear resolution in sight.
