The Bozeman High School softball team will be forfeiting its varsity competition this season due to a lack of players. District activities director Mark Ator announced that the team, comprised mostly of younger players, only had 12 athletes sign up for the spring season. Despite efforts to recruit more players, the team will focus on scheduling JV games instead.
Coach Troy Hostetler, who also coaches the boys basketball team, returned to lead the softball team in hopes of stabilizing a program that has struggled in recent years. The Hawks only won one game in 2024 and have had minimal success in previous seasons. Ator expressed disappointment and frustration at not being able to field a varsity team, especially for a Class AA school like Bozeman.
Ator has informed the Montana High School Association and Class AA activities directors about the team’s situation. While the varsity season may not be happening, the players and coaches are still determined to have a successful season with the JV schedule. Despite the setbacks, they are looking forward to improving and growing the program in the future.
