A federal appeals court has put on hold a lower court’s ruling that ordered the government to rehire around 24,000 probationary workers. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals stated in a 2-1 ruling that the district court likely did not have jurisdiction over the claims made by the workers. The decision has effectively ended the injunction directing the workers to be reinstated. This ruling is part of a broader case involving federal agencies firing a large number of employees without proper procedures. The government claimed the workers were let go for individual reasons, but the court found that they were all collectively dismissed without notice. The Supreme Court also issued a similar ruling in a case involving around 16,000 workers that the Trump administration had sought to fire. The 4th Circuit’s decision is pending a full appeal from the government.
