Montana Republicans are more satisfied with the state government’s management of wildlife, environment, transportation infrastructure, and public safety compared to Democrats. A recent poll conducted by Montana Free Press-Eagleton showed that respondents overall were most content with how these four issues were handled, with satisfaction rankings above 50%. The poll, conducted by Rutgers University’s Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling, surveyed over 900 residents statewide in late January and early February.
Republican lawmakers hold the majority in the Montana Legislature and have dominated every statewide elected office since the 2020 election. There was a significant difference between Republicans and Democrats on the issue of abortion access, with a 57-point gap in opinions. Despite this, more than three in five Montanans support legal abortion in most cases.
Issues such as healthcare and Medicaid expansion also showed differences in satisfaction between Republicans and Democrats, with more Democrats supporting these policies. Bipartisan support in the Legislature has led to the continuation of Medicaid without an end date in the current legislative session.
On the flip side, property taxes, cost of living, mental health and addiction, and state income taxes were among the top issues drawing dissatisfaction from both parties. Montana residents saw a 21% increase in property taxes in 2023, prompting lawmakers to work on addressing the issue.
Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers are in agreement on the need to address property tax concerns, with several proposals on the table to tackle the issue. Overall, the poll revealed a mix of satisfaction and dissatisfaction with the state government’s handling of various key issues among Montana residents.
