Microsoft’s Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy: Harnessing Technology for Impact

Microsoft is leading the charge in environmental sustainability with ambitious goals to become carbon negative by 2030 and remove all historical emissions by 2050. The tech giant has committed $1 billion towards a climate innovation fund to scale up carbon removal and reduction technologies.

In 2023, Microsoft significantly increased its renewable energy assets to 19.8 GW across 21 countries, on track to achieve its goal of 100% renewable energy supply by 2025. The company also aims to be water positive by 2030, having already contracted 61.7 million cubic metres of water replenishment.

Microsoft is also working to minimize waste by adopting circular economy principles and diverting 18,537 tonnes of waste in 2023. Additionally, the company has surpassed its target to protect more land than it uses, safeguarding over 15,800 acres.

To offset the environmental impact of its cloud infrastructure, Microsoft entered a $200 million deal in 2024 to purchase carbon credits that support the restoration of Brazil’s Amazon and Atlantic forests. Amy Luers, Senior Global Director for Sustainability Science and Innovation at Microsoft, emphasizes the urgent need for the world to pivot towards a more sustainable future at an unprecedented pace and scale. Microsoft’s commitment to environmental sustainability sets a high bar for other companies to follow suit.
