Republican Representative John James throws his hat in the ring for Michigan governor race

Michigan Republican Rep. John James announced his candidacy for governor, citing a need for strong and competent leadership in the state. He expressed his support for President Donald Trump and vowed to bring prosperity and sanity back to Michigan if elected. James, an Army veteran and businessman, previously ran for Senate and won a House seat in 2022.

The race to replace Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who is term-limited, has drawn several prominent politicians, including state Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt and former state Attorney General Mike Cox. On the Democratic side, Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson are also running for governor.

The winner of the party primaries will face Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who is running as an independent. James’ candidacy opens up a competitive House seat in southeastern Michigan, which both Democrats and Republicans have fiercely contested in recent elections.

Michigan’s upcoming gubernatorial election is seen as one of the most pivotal in 2026, with big-name politicians on both sides vying for the position. The race is expected to be highly competitive, with candidates from different parties highlighting their experiences and accomplishments in state government.
