Ravalli County officials have selected a replacement for the vacant state House seat

Ravalli County officials have named Republican Terry Nelson as the replacement for former state Rep. Ron Marshall in House District 87. Nelson, a surveyor by trade and former chair of the Ravalli County Republican Central Committee, was unanimously appointed by the county commissioners. Nelson, who ran for governor in 2016, emphasized his experience in local and state-level Republican politics and his ability to work with all sides of the party.

Despite starting his legislative career in the middle of the 2025 session, Nelson expressed confidence in “hitting the ground running” and adapting quickly to the role. Marshall resigned last week following the advancement of a bill that would create a registry for and ban some vape products containing nicotine, a measure that would impact his two vape shops. Marshall cited frustration with his caucus’s support for the bill and the influence of lobbyists in policy making.

Nelson’s appointment comes at a time of political tension within the party, but he remains optimistic about his ability to navigate the challenges ahead. With a background in surveying and a history of active involvement in Republican politics, Nelson is poised to bring a fresh perspective to the legislature and represent the interests of House District 87. As he takes on this new role, Nelson is committed to working diligently and collaboratively to address the issues facing his constituents and the state as a whole.
