Montana Senate addresses judicial elections and marijuana taxes before deadline

The Montana Legislature faced a busy day on Friday as they worked to address a deadline looming on Saturday. Any bill that impacts state revenues must pass either the House or Senate by the end of Saturday to stay alive. During a marathon session, the Senate debated over two dozen bills on the agenda.

One of the key issues addressed was Senate Bill 543, which aimed to allow candidates for judicial offices to use political party labels. However, the bill was voted down 27-22, with Republicans arguing that judges are not impartial under the current nonpartisan system. There have been multiple attempts this session to change the state’s judicial election process. Governor Greg Gianforte has advocated for switching to partisan judicial elections.

In addition to the judicial election bill, the Senate also advanced Senate Bill 561, which would change the way members of the Montana Public Service Commission are selected. The bill proposes switching the commission to two elected members and three appointed by the governor.

Another bill, Senate Bill 537, aims to change the way state marijuana tax revenues are distributed. The bill would direct some of the revenue towards grants for law enforcement agencies, drug and alcohol prevention, and the state’s behavioral health system.

Overall, lawmakers have introduced over 1,500 bills this session, with 923 making it through at least one chamber by Friday. With 24 legislative days left in the 90-day session, the Montana Legislature is working diligently to address important issues before the deadline.
