Missoula News: Seeking Public Input for Historic Preservation Efforts

Preserve Historic Missoula, a local nonprofit organization in Missoula, Montana, is calling on residents to nominate endangered and historic properties in the area. The organization is encouraging the community to submit nominations for individual buildings or entire neighborhoods that they believe need attention. Nominations can be made through a form available on the organization’s social media pages, where residents can describe the history of the properties and share pictures.

Sophia Etier, the Vice President of Preserve Historic Missoula, explained that the organization plans to evaluate the nominations based on various criteria, such as the number of nominations for specific buildings or districts. The deadline for nominations is May 1, and the organization aims to finalize the list of historic properties by the end of May.

Preserve Historic Missoula has previously identified areas like the Bonner Mill area and the Old Post Hospital at Fort Missoula as historic. Etier emphasized the importance of maintaining a list of historic properties, stating that it helps connect the community’s past with its future. While some nominations have already been submitted for areas in Downtown Missoula and residential districts, they have not yet been deemed historic. The organization plans to share public nominations once they are finalized.
