Broadview native and Montana Western alum Kyle Erickson has successfully turned around the College of Idaho women’s basketball program in just his second year as head coach. After a 10-19 record in his first season, Erickson led the team to the NAIA national tournament for the first time since 2012-13, where they achieved a road upset in the first round.
Erickson emphasized the importance of finding players that fit his coaching style, with two core values of growth and grit driving the team’s success. Despite falling in the second round to Georgetown (Ky.), the Yotes finished with an 18-13 record, an eight-win increase from the previous year.
Erickson acknowledged the challenge of breaking into the competitive Cascade Collegiate Conference but praised his players for their hard work and belief in themselves. He credited his coaching partner, Colby Blaine, for his mentorship and learning experience.
Inspired by the success of the College of Idaho men’s team, Erickson aims to recruit more Montana players for the women’s roster, bridging the connection between Idaho and Montana basketball. Despite aspirations to coach at higher levels, Erickson has found a sense of home in Caldwell, Idaho, emphasizing the importance of community and family in the coaching profession.
With his team’s impressive turnaround and positive trajectory, Erickson’s leadership and coaching abilities have garnered attention and praise, promising a bright future for the College of Idaho women’s basketball program.
