Prosecutors push for 7-year prison sentence for George Santos in fraud trial

Prosecutors are seeking more than seven years in prison for former U.S. Rep. George Santos after he pleaded guilty to federal fraud and identity theft charges. They argue that Santos’ crimes have made a mockery of the election system, and that he has shown no genuine remorse. Santos’ lawyers argue for a two-year prison term, pointing out his lack of prior criminal record and his support for his family. They believe such a sentence is in line with other similar cases involving political figures. Santos’ downfall began when it was revealed that he had fabricated much of his life story, including financial struggles and false educational and work history. He admitted to deceiving voters, donors, and stealing identities for donations to his campaign. Santos was given a three-month reprieve to pay court fines, and agreed to pay nearly $375,000 in restitution and $205,000 in forfeiture as part of his plea deal. Prosecutors argue that Santos has profited from his infamy, earning over $800,000 from public appearances and a documentary since his expulsion from Congress. Two of Santos’ campaign staffers have also pleaded guilty to federal charges related to the campaign financing scheme. Santos’ sentencing is scheduled for April 25, and his lawyers argue that he has taken responsibility for his actions and should be given a less severe sentence.
