Montana has officially made rodeo its state sport, joining Texas, Wyoming, and South Dakota in this designation. The legislature recently passed House Bill 190, which is now awaiting the governor’s signature. Senator Wendy McKamey expressed excitement for this bill, stating that it represents the state’s heritage and outdoor culture. While some senators raised concerns about the omission of the Indian Relay from the bill, it was ultimately supported by the Montana American Indian Caucus. Senator Butch Gillespie highlighted the uniqueness of Indian rodeos and their popularity in the state.
Rodeo is also well-represented at the collegiate level in Montana, with the College National Finals Rodeo being held in Bozeman for nearly 25 years. Five colleges in the state have rodeo teams or clubs, and Montana State University has a strong presence at the CNFR. The state also hosted the high school finals rodeo competition last June, sending 100 contestants to the National High School Finals Rodeo.
Rodeo is a symbol of western heritage and is a major attraction for both contestants and spectators in Montana. Many professional rodeo competitors make it a point to participate in the state’s rodeo events during the summer. Designating rodeo as the state sport is seen as a positive step to further highlight and promote the sport on a national level.
