Three U.S. Army soldiers who went missing in Lithuania during a training exercise have been found dead, with one soldier still missing. The soldiers were from the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, and were deployed to Lithuania in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve. The soldiers’ armored vehicle became submerged in a peat bog during a mission, and search and recovery operations are ongoing for the fourth soldier. The soldiers were stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
The U.S. Army, along with Lithuanian armed forces and law enforcement, worked together to find the missing soldiers. The recovery effort required specialized equipment to stabilize the soft ground in the area, and after six days, the 63-ton armored vehicle was removed from the peat bog. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the U.S. Army and Lithuanian authorities.
Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, 3rd Inf. Div. commanding general, expressed sorrow for the loss of the soldiers and emphasized the importance of bringing every soldier home. The soldiers’ identities are being withheld pending family notification. Lithuania has been a NATO member since 2004 and has hosted U.S. troops as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve since 2014. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
