Montana Governor Greg Gianforte and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are advocating for a federally balanced budget to address the country’s growing deficit. They are pushing for a resolution calling for a Convention of States to create a federal balanced budget amendment. Currently, 27 states have joined the call for a States’ Convention to tackle the federal budget issue.
DeSantis and Gianforte believe that Washington’s excessive spending needs to be curbed to prevent future generations from inheriting a financial mess. They argue that a balanced budget requirement would force Congress to approach spending more responsibly. However, achieving a balanced federal budget would likely require significant cuts to federal programs or tax increases.
Although a federally balanced budget is considered challenging, Gianforte remains optimistic that it can be achieved without major tax hikes. The governors are engaging with legislators to rally support for a Convention of States and potentially reshape the federal budget landscape. A Montana Senate resolution invoking Article V is currently in progress, signaling progress towards addressing the issue.
