DOGE cuts result in 80% reduction of funding for Montana Fair Housing

Montana Fair Housing, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing housing discrimination, was blindsided by a recent 80% budget cut from the Department of Government Efficiency. The cut, announced via email, has forced the organization to ask the public for help to continue its vital work. Executive director Pam Bean expressed shock and frustration at the sudden loss of funding, which was providing $425,000 per year for education, outreach, and dispute resolution.

The grant termination, citing a lack of alignment with agency priorities, has led to the cancellation of planned employee hires and threatens the organization’s ability to continue operations. Bean highlighted the impact of the funding cut on services for Montana residents and criticized the lack of notice and communication from HUD.

Montana Fair Housing has joined a national legal challenge against the cuts, arguing that the abrupt nature of the funding loss is detrimental to the services they provide. Without additional funding, the organization may be forced to operate on a limited basis, leaving many in the state without essential housing discrimination services.
