Local history group, the Northwest Montana Westerners, will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day by hosting a presentation on Montana’s Territorial Governor and Civil War general Thomas Meagher. The event will take place on March 17th at 7 p.m. at the Northwest Montana History Museum in Kalispell. Meagher, a dynamic speaker during the Irish Famine, escaped execution in 1848 and later fought in the Civil War, leading the “Irish Brigade.” After the war, he became acting Governor of Montana Territory before mysteriously disappearing in 1867.
Retired colonel Tim Christenson will be the presenter, discussing Meagher’s contributions to the Union cause, as well as his mysterious disappearance and lasting legacy. The event will also include insights into Irish lore and possibly a song. Admission is $5 for the public, with free entry for history group members and youth under 16. Christenson’s engaging presentation last year promises a mix of history and entertainment for attendees of all ages. Meagher, who is still honored with a statue in front of the state Capitol in Helena, remains a complex and revered figure in both Irish and American history.
